Some places you come back to, adn you feel that time has been bustling along at a terrific rate and that agathaa sorts of things will have happened — and changed…. It’s as readable, engrossing, and intricately woven as I’ve come to expect from Christie, and it was just what I was in the mood for.

I am reminded of the sort of ingenuity that Christie utilizes in a late Miss Marple Mystery, Nemesis, written around this same period. What a fur stole could tell about a woman for a man, anyhow? He finds the painting was done by an artist called Boscowan. Lancaster stirs up worry among those in charge with her bizarre, disjointed ramblings about ‘your poor child’ and ‘something behind the fireplace’.

It was the only book of theirs that I could have easily read in one sitting if I’d been lucky enough to agatya the time because it was a layered, exciting read where the ending wasn’t obvious from the beginning and that made the conclusion even more menacing. Tommy went to a conference, so he was absent for a few days, so during that time Tuppence did her best to remember where did she saw that house at the painting. The creepiness was back in full force on re-reading, and I had forgotten the twist that occurs in the denouement and was very startled and unnerved by it!
